The principal room of the house — panelled, grand and quiet, with a dressing room of its own and a fire laid each evening before you return.

High windows look down the formal avenue; a four-poster stands against oak panelling hung with estate portraits. The dressing room leads to a marble bathroom with a deep double bath, and a decanter of something from the cellar waits on the side.

It is the room we keep for anniversaries and the occasional homecoming — the best the house has to give.
